MiZA (Mission Zero Academy) is a spin-off of the European non-governmental organization Zero Waste Europe (ZWE). ZWE focuses on reducing and preventing waste in our society by supporting and nurturing communities across Europe in their journey towards zero waste through sustainable strategies and implementation of circular economy practices.
MiZA serves as the advisor of choice for municipalities and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) seeking guidance in zero waste and circular economy strategies.
The certification involves an independent, third-party assessed standard following the methodology set by Zero Waste Europe. MiZA issues the certification based on the verification of a MiZA-accredited auditor. The Mentors guiding the businesses are also MiZA-accredited. It goes beyond EU and national regulations, fostering efficient systems that promote proven implementation for cities and businesses.
We have a first set of criterias your city/business would need to meet. These are called “On the road”/”Candidate City” criterias. These criterias are the same for all cities/businesses. They include a commitment to zero waste and other necessary foundations setting you up for success.
Obtaining a zero waste certification offers various benefits. It enhances your environmental reputation, showcases commitment to sustainable practices, and attracts eco-conscious customers/employees/partners. Beyond these gains, it streamlines waste management, reduces costs, and contributes to a healthier, greener future. Being a Certified city or business will play a further role in supporting Europe’s transition, increasing your credibility and recognition as a leader of a business in your sector.
The steps are quite straightforward. First, we assess your current situation and compliance with the first set of criteria, we establish a customised plan for you. You become an “On the road to Zero Waste” candidate. From there, we support you in the implementation of that plan, reaching set targets, achieving compliance with the second set of criterias. Once the results are here, our auditor will assess them. Each criteria is divided into 3 levels and evaluated against those, so you will receive very detailed feedback on your actions. Should their assessment be positive, you become a champion and receive the Zero Waste Business Certification status. To ensure continuous improvement and commitment to Zero Waste, we will monitor your achievements once every 3 years.
1. Expression of Interest: Show interest by submitting to local Zero Waste Europe members or Mission Zero Academy.
2. Commitment: Become a “On the Road” to Zero Waste Business. Craft and present your certification roadmap under set requirements.
3.Implementation: Take up to two years to complete the Certification scorecard and provide evidence to the formal auditor.
4.Certification: After a third-party assessment on performance and impact, you become a Certified Business
5.Yearly Improvements: Maintain yearly enhancements and undergo audits every three years. There’s an opportunity to reach a 5-star level.
Throughout your certification journey, you’ll receive comprehensive support, in the form of a Mentorship, that will include guidance, resources, and expert assistance. Your designated Mentor will carry out advisory work (predefined hours) to support you design and implement your Zero Waste plans. In addition, you will be given access to written resources, zero waste training and access to a network of organisations working towards similar zero waste goals.
Working together with your dedicated Mentor, you will establish a custom implementation plan based on your unique set of goals and manageable targets.
A Mentor is an accredited expert with solid experience in waste management, zero waste philosophy, auditing environmental systems, and the Zero Waste Certification system. They have successfully completed the mandatory training provided by MiZA. Mentors assigned to deliver certification services must be Accredited Mentors of the Mission Zero Academy
Our Auditors have the requirements to disclose dependencies as part of their contract with us. We train them and monitor their work.
